An anti-kick bar is a metal clamp that sits over a cow's back just in front of the hip bones. It stops the cow kicking during milking. Use it on a fresh-calved cow or a cow with mastitis.

How an anti-kick bar works

A cow uses the muscles of her back to kick. The bar presses in from both sides in front of the hips. Under that pressure the cow cannot lift a leg. She stays standing and the milker works in peace. The A2Z anti-kick bar locks with a spring button. It sets to many positions so it fits both small and large cows.

How to fit an anti-kick bar step by step

1. Tie the cow to a post and calm her.
2. Press the spring button and open the bar fully.
3. Place the bar over the back. The spot is just in front of the hip bones.
4. Set one end in the hollow of the flank on one side and the other end on the other side.
5. Squeeze the bar until both ends sit firm. The button clicks when it locks.
6. Milk the cow. Take the bar off as soon as you finish.

The bar is only for milking time. Remove it the moment the job is done.

When to use a cow lifter

Sometimes a cow goes down and cannot stand on her own. Then the cow lifter helps. It clamps on the hip bones and you lift with a chain or rope. It helps the cow get back on her feet. Always use this tool with two people.

What is a midwifery rope

At calving time the midwifery rope pulls the calf. It is a flat rope 2.3 m long and 2 cm wide. Both ends have loops so the noose goes on the calf's leg with ease. The flat weave cuts into the leg less than a round rope. The bar, the lifter and the rope are the tools for a cow's hard days and they sell together in the shop.
