Why put ear tags on cattle

On a large farm it is hard to tell every animal apart. A number tag makes records easy. Which cow calved when and when she got medicine all goes down by number. A tag lasts for years once fitted.

What an ear tag looks like

A tag comes in two parts. The female part carries the printed number. The male part carries the pin. The pin passes through the ear and locks into the female part. A2Z numbered ear tags are made of TPU polyurethane. One tag weighs 6 g and a pack holds 100. Numbers print from 001 upward. They come in 4 colours. They fit cattle, sheep and pigs.

How to fit a tag with an ear tag applicator step by step

1. Restrain the animal in a travis or with a rope. The head must not move.
2. Load the female tag in one jaw of the applicator and the male pin in the other. The pin must line up with the hole in the female part.
3. Pick the middle of the ear. Stay clear of the thick vein.
4. Wipe the spot with a clean cloth.
5. Place the applicator on the ear and squeeze in one firm press. The pin passes through and locks.
6. Open the applicator and wiggle the tag by hand. It should turn but not come out.
7. Write the number in the register.

How to remove an old tag

When a tag breaks or the number must change you need a remover. Pulling by hand can tear the ear. The Ear tag remover is a stainless steel plier. It cuts the pin and the tag comes apart. Fit the new tag in a different spot.

• Tag material: a TPU tag bends and does not break.
• Numbers: a pack runs from 001 upward. Match it to the farm record.
