Medicine spilling? Choose a drenching gun

The easiest way to give a cow liquid medicine is a drenching gun or a large syringe. Fill it, slide the nozzle into the side of the mouth and press slowly. The cow swallows and the medicine reaches the stomach.

What is a drenching gun

A drenching gun is a pistol shaped tool. You set one dose and every pull of the trigger gives that exact amount. When every animal needs the same dose this is the fastest way. The A2Z drench gun 30 ml gives a dose from 5 ml to 30 ml. It works for liquid medicine and deworming.

When to use a large syringe

When the dose is large a drenching gun is too small. Then use the 500 ml drenching syringe. Its nozzle is 25 cm long and reaches deep into the mouth. The body is 65 mm wide so it sits well in the hand. For small doses the 50 ml syringe is enough. It suits calves and goats.

How to give a cow medicine step by step

1. Tie the cow to a post or have someone hold the head.
2. Check the dose on the vet's slip and fill the tool.
3. Stand at one side of the cow. Lift the head a little with one hand.
4. Slide the nozzle in from the side of the mouth. Use the gap behind the teeth and place it over the tongue.
5. Press slowly. Give the cow time to swallow.
6. Lift the head only a little. Lifting it too high sends medicine down the wrong way.
7. After the job wash the tool in clean water and dry it.

What a vaccinator gun does

A vaccinator is not for oral medicine. It is for injections. The dose sets from 0.5 ml to 3 ml and every animal gets the same amount. For vaccinating a large herd the vaccinator is many times faster than a hand syringe. It is 19 cm long so it fits a large hand too.

• Drench gun 30 ml: dose 5 to 30 ml. For deworming and daily liquid medicine.
• Syringe 500 ml: capacity 500 ml with a scale from 150 to 500 ml. Nozzle 25 cm. For large doses.
• Syringe 50 ml: small doses for calves and sheep or goats.
• Vaccinator: dose 0.5 to 3 ml. Injections only.
