It is a small plastic cup that fits on the water line. The cup has a small valve inside. When the hen touches the tongue in the cup the valve opens and water flows. Why a water cup beats an open bowl

In an open bowl the hen spills water and droppings land in it. The bowl needs washing every day. A water cup is a closed system. Water stays inside the line and the cup fills only as much as the hen drinks. In a large shed the labour drops a lot.

How to fit water cups in a poultry shed

1. Place the water tank above the level of the hens. Gravity feeds the line.
2. Run a PVC pipe from the tank along the length of the shed.
3. Drill holes in the pipe to match the cup fitting. Keep an equal gap between holes.
4. Screw the cup with its fitting into the pipe. Wrap tape on the thread so it does not leak.
5. Hang the pipe at a height where the hen's back sits below the cup. The hen should raise its head a little to drink.
6. Open the tank valve and check every cup. Clean the valve of any cup that does not fill.
7. Raise the pipe as the chicks grow.

Cleaning and care of water cups

Flush the line once a week. Keep the tank lid closed so dust stays out. If dirt collects in a cup wipe it out by hand. In winter keep the line in the sun so the water does not get cold.

A separate waterer for sheep and goats
