Could an ID Mix-Up Delay Your Claim?

You know each animal by its face, but the number on the paperwork does not seem to match the tag. That is a problem worth resolving before you need the insurance record.

You know each animal by its face, but the number on the paperwork does not seem to match the tag. That is a problem worth resolving before you need the insurance record.

Farm recognition and insurance identity are different jobs

DAHD's National Livestock Mission guidance requires insured animals to be uniquely identified. It also describes using an existing programme identity where applicable and photographs that show the animal and its tag. Read the applicable policy with the insurer; a familiar animal name is not a substitute for the required identification.

An ordinary tag bought for farm management is not automatically an approved insurance identifier. Do not assume that its colour, material or printed number establishes compliance. Ask the insurer and veterinary professional which identification and documents apply to the specific animal and policy.

Avoid a scramble when the record matters

A mismatch can leave you needing clarification and supporting documents. Whether it affects a claim depends on the policy and the insurer's assessment; this guide cannot promise approval or predict a delay. Keep a record of any correction request and the response you receive.

The practical cost to track is your own time spent searching, travelling or asking for missing records. The point of an identity check is to reduce uncertainty while the animal and documents can be checked together. It is a quiet job that deserves a place beside the more visible farm work.

Check the record while the animal is well

  1. Bring the animal record, policy documents and available photographs together. Read the tag carefully and compare it with the identifier recorded in each place.
  2. Keep your internal farm number clearly distinguished from any official identifier. Record the relationship between them so another family member can understand it.
  3. Ask the insurer or authorised veterinary professional to resolve a mismatch. Do not alter an official identifier or rewrite a policy entry on your own.
  4. Report a missing or damaged official tag promptly and request the required replacement procedure. Keep evidence of the report and any instructions received.
  5. Store copies where they can be found during an urgent situation. Review identity records when animals arrive, leave or undergo an authorised identification change.

Where A2Z ear tags help

A2Z ear tags can support internal animal identification and matching everyday farm records. We do not present these retail tags as approved insurance tags or as a guarantee that an insurance claim will be accepted. Obtain confirmation from the responsible authority before making that assumption.

Ask a trained handler about appropriate tag selection and fitting for the animal. This article is about checking records, not piercing an ear. Do not remove an existing official tag just to make a farm numbering system look consistent; resolve the record system around the required identity.

When to contact the vet and insurer

Contact the insurer for policy and claim requirements. Involve the authorised veterinary professional for identification checks and any ear injury, swelling or discharge around a tag. If an insured animal becomes ill, seek veterinary care promptly and follow the policy's notification requirements without guessing deadlines.

A farm that knows its animals should have records that know them too.
