Small towns now have a dog or cat in many homes. Every pet needs a collar, leash, brush, comb and bath gear. In many towns no single shop sells all of this. People order online or travel to a big city.
Accessories need no Pet Shop Rules registration
First decide what you will sell. Selling live animals such as puppies, birds or fish falls under the Pet Shop Rules. That needs registration with the State Animal Welfare Board and has rules on how animals are kept. Accessories are different. A collar, leash, brush or comb is a product. For these the papers of an ordinary shop are enough.
That is why many people start with accessories only. It needs less space, there is no animal care cost and the stock does not spoil. Later you can add grooming or food if you want.
Three ways to run the business
- A small shop. A small shop near a market or colony, collars and leashes hung on the wall.
- A counter inside a shop. A pet shelf in a general store, gift shop or vet clinic.
- Online and WhatsApp. You buy by the carton and ship single pieces.
Papers
- GST registration. To sell online, a GST number is asked for almost everywhere.
- Shop and establishment registration, from the state labour department.
- Udyam registration, which is free.
Live animals and pet food have their own rules. Ask a CA or the district office first.
What to keep as first stock
Start with a pet's daily needs: walking, tying and keeping clean.
- For walks, the buckle dog collar, leash and harness and rope leash. Keep sizes for small and large dogs.
- For tying, the dog chain. In villages and farmhouses it sells more for guard dogs.
- For coats, the slicker brush, deshedding rake and fine comb.
- For loose undercoat, stock the stainless steel undercoat rake.
- For baths, the bath brush and foldable pet bowl.
- For the home, the lint roller, which lifts hair off clothes.
The full range is on the pets page and the leads and collars page.
How the shop should look
Pet gear sells on sight. Hang collars and leashes on the wall by colour. Keep brushes and combs open on the counter so buyers can hold them. Mark the size on each collar. A pet owner does not know his dog's size, so keep a measuring tape and show how to measure the neck. A buyer remembers this small help.
Stock by season
- Before summer, dogs shed more hair. Demand for the deshedding rake and slicker brush rises then.
- In the monsoon, ticks and fleas rise. The flea comb and bath gear move more then.
- In the months when people bring home new puppies, small collars and light leashes sell. Ask your local vet when that is.
How to find buyers
- Meet vet clinics. Every pet owner visits the vet. Keep your list or some stock at the clinic.
- Meet groomers and kennels. They buy brushes, combs and nail clippers in bulk. Stock the pet nail clipper with file for nail care.
- Post your list in dog park, colony and society WhatsApp groups.
- Farmhouses and dairy farms keep guard dogs. Chains and thick collars sell there.
- Build an online listing. Buy by the carton and courier single pieces. The A2Z start your business page covers this route too.
How to bring buyers back
A pet owner cares deeply for the pet. He returns to the shop that remembers the pet by name. Note each buyer's name, the pet's name and size in a notebook or phone. Think about when brushes and combs wear out and message at that time. When a collar gets small, show the next size. In a small town one happy buyer brings ten new ones.
Margin and rates
You set your own rate. The gap between the wholesale rate and your rate is your margin. In pet accessories a buyer looks at colour, size and quality, not rate alone. Check online rates when you set yours, and add the value of your service. The buyer gets the item at once and can swap a size. Give groomers and kennels a bulk rate, since they buy every month.
