Pigs spilling water? Choose a nipple drinker

A nipple drinker gives pigs clean water and ends the trouble of bowls. The pig presses the nipple with its mouth and water flows.

What is a Pig nipple drinker

A nipple drinker is a metal tube with a spring loaded pin inside. When the pig presses the pin water comes out. When it lets go the water stops. Unlike a bowl the water stays clean. The A2Z pig nipple drinker comes in stainless steel or brass. Packs are 10, 15 and 20.

Why fit nipples instead of bowls

A pig spills water from a bowl and lies down in it. Mud and dung mix into the water. A nipple is a closed system. Water stays inside the pipe and goes straight into the pig's mouth. The floor stays dry and less water is wasted.

How to build a water line on a pig farm

1. Place the water tank above the level of the pens.
2. Run GI or PVC pipe from the tank to every pen.
3. In each pen bring one end of the pipe down and fit an elbow.
4. Screw the nipple into the elbow. Wrap tape on the thread.
5. Angle the nipple slightly downward. It is easier for the pig to press.
6. For grown pigs set the nipple at shoulder height. For small pigs fit a second nipple lower down.
7. Open the tank valve and press every nipple by hand to check it.

A feeder for piglets

Along with water piglets need their own feed. A piglet feeder is made of steel with slots built in. Each piglet eats from its own slot and feed does not spill. The A2Z piglet feeder is stainless steel. It comes in 25, 28 and 32 cm sizes with 4 or 5 slots. Place the feeder near the nipple line so the piglets get both in one spot.

Care of nipple drinkers

Flush the line every week. If dirt jams a nipple open it and clean it. Replace the spring on any nipple that keeps dripping. Keep the tank covered.

What to check before you buy

• Material: stainless steel does not rust. Brass lasts long too. A2Z stocks both.
• Pack size: packs of 10, 15 or 20. Buy by the number of pens.
• Thread size: match the thread to the pipe elbow.
• Spring: the spring should be neither too stiff nor too loose. A piglet must be able to press it.
• Feeder size: pick 4 or 5 slots by the number of piglets.
