A Cold Night Can Set Your Calf Back

The night has turned cold and you find yourself checking the calf again before going to sleep. A blanket may help with comfort, but first look at the calf and the place it must spend the night.

The night has turned cold and you find yourself checking the calf again before going to sleep. A blanket may help with comfort, but first look at the calf and the place it must spend the night.

Start with the animal and its shelter

NDDB's cow comfort manual identifies exposure to extreme cold among possible reasons for low body temperature. It also treats a calf's weakness or inability to stand as warning signs requiring attention. Do not assume that every quiet calf is simply resting or that every weak calf only needs another covering.

TNAU's cold-weather advisory recommends dry bedding and covering for newborn calves in the regions it discusses. Use that husbandry principle with a local veterinary plan for your conditions. The advisory is not a current weather forecast, and a blanket is not a universal substitute for shelter and appropriate feeding.

Make the worry useful

For your own record, note the calf's feeding, activity and resting conditions during cold weather. Also record additional care or veterinary attention. Avoid a purchase decision based on a promised growth increase, guaranteed survival or a fixed amount of feed saved; none is established for this product here.

You are protecting more than the evening's routine. The calf is part of the herd you hope to raise. Turn the extra trip to the shed into a deliberate check so that the next person looking after it knows what has changed and what needs attention.

Prepare before the coldest part of the night

  1. Check whether the calf is alert, standing and feeding normally. Contact the vet about abnormal behaviour rather than treating a covering as the first answer to illness.
  2. Examine the resting area for wet bedding and exposure to cold wind or rain. Arrange suitable dry shelter and bedding while keeping the housing ventilated.
  3. Ask the vet whether a blanket is appropriate for this calf and these conditions. Use it on a dry calf and follow the fitting and care instructions.
  4. Check the fit, fastenings and dryness after fitting. Look for slipping, rubbing or discomfort, and reassess the need as conditions change.
  5. Follow the calf's feeding plan and record what it actually takes. Share the checks with the next carer and arrange further observation rather than assuming the blanket completes the job.

Where the A2Z blanket helps

An A2Z calf blanket offers an additional covering for a dry calf when suitable for its care plan. It cannot repair a wet resting area, provide nutrition or treat a calf that is ill. Confirm the fit for the individual animal before use.

Keep a practical plan for cleaning and drying the blanket. Ask the adviser how to adjust its use as the weather and calf's condition change. Do not invent a single temperature threshold or leave the same arrangement unchecked because it seemed suitable the previous evening.

When to call the vet

Seek prompt veterinary help for weakness, poor feeding, difficulty standing, diarrhoea or abnormal breathing. Make urgent contact if the calf deteriorates or cannot stand. Report the cold exposure, but leave diagnosis and treatment to the vet; warmth alone may not address the problem.

Strong farms make room for the small animal on the cold night.
