Infrared heat bulb hanging over a chick brooder

Guide

Chicks feeling cold? Set up your infrared bulb

Cold chicks need careful heat control. Set up a 250 W infrared bulb, choose its height and watch chick behaviour to adjust warmth.

Chicks need heat for the first few weeks. An infrared heat bulb keeps one spot in the brooder warm and the chicks go there on their own. A 250 W bulb is the common size for one brooder.

Why chicks need heat

Newly hatched chicks cannot keep their own body warm. Under a hen they get that warmth. In a brooder there is no hen so the bulb does the job. As feathers grow the need for heat drops.

What is an infrared bulb

A normal bulb gives light. An infrared bulb gives heat. Its red glow is soft so the chicks sleep well at night. The A2Z infrared bulb is 250 W. It suits brooders and small poultry sheds.

How to fit the bulb in a brooder step by step

  1. Cover the brooder floor with dry straw or wood shavings.
  2. Fit the bulb in a metal or ceramic holder. A plastic holder melts from the heat.
  3. Hang the holder from the roof with a chain or wire. Leave room to move it up and down.
  4. Set the bulb high enough that a hand under it feels warm but does not burn.
  5. Switch the bulb on a few hours before the chicks arrive. The floor warms up.
  6. Keep water and feed near the bulb. Not right under it.

How to set the heat by watching the chicks

The chicks tell you if the heat is right.

  • Huddled in a pile right under the bulb: they are cold. Lower the bulb.
  • Away from the bulb at the edges: too hot. Raise the bulb.
  • Spread across the whole brooder: the heat is right.

Raise the bulb a little every week. The chicks grow and need less heat.

What to check before you buy

  • Wattage: 250 W is the common size for one brooder. For a small box hang the bulb higher.
  • Holder: pick a ceramic or metal holder. The heat of the bulb ruins plastic.
  • Wiring: 250 W is a real load so use thick wire and a proper plug.
  • Count: a large shed needs several bulbs. One bulb warms one spot only.

Stock the shop before poultry season. Demand for bulbs rises the moment winter starts.
