Infrared heat bulb hanging over a chick brooder

Keep Cold Nights From Taking Piglets

The sow has farrowed, and every visit to the pen begins with counting the piglets. On a cold or rainy night, warmth deserves a planned check rather than a hopeful glance at a glowing bulb.

The sow has farrowed, and every visit to the pen begins with counting the piglets. On a cold or rainy night, warmth deserves a planned check rather than a hopeful glance at a glowing bulb.

The pen matters as much as the lamp

TNAU's pig care guidance recommends a warm, dry and clean farrowing pen. It identifies infrared lamps or electric bulbs as possible sources of artificial warmth during cold and rainy weather to help address chilling. This supports providing appropriate heat; it does not establish that any bulb will suit every pen.

Treat the installation as a system to be checked with a livestock adviser and a competent electrical installer. The animals, bedding, holder, wiring and monitoring arrangement all need consideration. Do not derive a hanging height, coverage area or number of piglets from the bulb's name.

Record what you can actually observe

Write down the piglets' activity, whether they are suckling, the conditions in the pen and any losses. Include interruptions to the heat supply and changes made to the setup. These notes help an adviser investigate without assuming that every weak piglet or death was caused by cold.

It is hard to leave the shed when a litter is new. A clear observation plan gives that concern a direction. Agree who checks the pen next and what changes require a call, instead of letting the last person who looked become the only person who knows.

Prepare and monitor the warm area

  1. Ask the livestock adviser to assess the litter and pen and set an appropriate warmth plan. Report weak piglets or difficulty suckling before making equipment the whole discussion.
  2. Have a competent person check the lamp, holder and electrical installation against the manufacturer's instructions. Secure the equipment and keep combustible material and water away from electrical parts.
  3. Maintain the clean, dry pen that TNAU recommends. Check for wet bedding and exposure to rain or cold wind rather than trying to solve every housing problem with more heat.
  4. Observe piglets after installation or adjustment and use the monitoring method advised for the pen. A lamp that is lit does not by itself prove that conditions at piglet level are suitable.
  5. Arrange checks and a safe response to power interruption. Share observations with the next carer, and seek advice before improvising an alternative heat source.

Where the A2Z bulb helps

The A2Z piglet infrared bulb can supply warmth in a suitable installation. It is not an automatic controller, a disease treatment or a guarantee against piglet losses. Confirm compatibility with the intended holder and setup before use.

Follow the equipment instructions and the adviser's plan rather than copying a photograph from another farm. Review conditions after changes in weather or bedding. Never leave an unsafe electrical arrangement in service while waiting to see whether the piglets seem comfortable.

When to call the vet

Seek prompt veterinary help for weak piglets, failure to suckle, breathing difficulty or deaths. Continued problems despite checking the environment require investigation. Tell the vet about the warmth arrangement and observations, but do not delay the call while repeatedly changing the lamp position.

A stronger farm gives its smallest animals deliberate care from the start.
